John Laing in the 2006 ASTO race

Voyages available NOW

ASTO Small Ships races

There are places available on board John Laing for the 2009 ASTO small ships race. The voyage starts on Thursday 1 October 2009, with time for some race training before the main event on Saturday 3 October. There will then be parties and celebrations before the voyage ends on Sunday 4 October. Contact the office to book.

Places on the race voyage are open to anyone but ideally we would like at least some of the crew to be keen and competent sailors - maybe people with previous experience in John Laing? Age range 12-25 but we may wish to restrict the number of under-15s on this voyage.

PREVIOUS RACES

4 October 2008 : Solent race
A day of strong but irregular winds forcing endless reefs in and out. John Laing, with a crew from Budmouth Technology College, came 8th over the line but only 21st on handicap. But crew member Rosie, aged 13, did win the prize for the youngest female crew member in the race!

6 October 2007: Solent race
Sadly in light winds John Laing was unable to make a successful defence of her trophy won the previous June.

27 May - 1 June 2007: Torquay to St Peter Port, Guernsey

John Laing came first over the line and, on handicap, first in class and third overall!

ASTO (the Association of Sea Training Organisations) Small Ships races are for sail training vessels up to 120 feet in length, with crews of young people aged 25 or under.
